Hospice Care

Hospice is a philosophy of care that incorporates palliative care principles in meeting the holistic needs of the person facing their last weeks or months of life.

Paying attention to the physical, emotional, social and spiritual aspect of the person cared for, the hospice interdisciplinary team strives to relieve pain and suffering in all its dimensions and prepare the patient and family for the end of a life. The focus of hospice is on caring, not curing. Hospice care can be provided wherever the patient resides, however, it is usually provided in the patient’s own home.

Hospice care is available in hospitals contracted with a hospice agency, in freestanding hospice facilities (including hospice homes), in nursing homes, and in other long-term care facilities. Hospice services are available to patients of any age and facing any illness. Any person is welcome to contact hospice directly and obtain in-depth information relevant to their situation or to refer someone for hospice services. If you have any questions, please contact Kōkua Mau, or one of the state hospices listed below.

More videos about hospice care can be found at Moments of Life. The goal of Moments of Life: Made Possible by Hospice is to educate the public about the choices we all have when facing a life-limiting illness, and how choosing hospice is not ‘giving up.’ The campaign is also about capturing vivid, emotionally powerful ‘moments’ on video that show what people receiving hospice care genuinely experience.  You will find stories from across America, from the patient, family caregiver, and hospice professional points of view.  And you may be surprised to see how much more ‘living’ hospice enables in the last chapter of life.
