In 2022, a statewide assessment of the state of Hawai’i’s capacity, capability, and competency to provide high-quality palliative care to members of our communities with serious illness was conducted. Underwritten by the Stupski Foundation, this assessment looked at who offered palliative care outside of hospitals, and how providers, patients, and caregivers understood palliative care and its value. The assessment also explored stakeholders’ preferred content and method of communication, education, and messaging about palliative care, with an emphasis on ethnic, rural, and neighbor island communities where health care disparities are highest and resources are inadequate.

How can you help to make an impact?
Together with these same partners, Hui Pohala will develop a strategic plan to increase access to and utilization of palliative care services, especially for Medicaid beneficiaries using home and community-based care.
In Fall 2024, we will be sharing the results of the report with our community and soliciting feedback to prioritize recommendations and create an implementation plan to accelerate growth and access to high quality palliative care.
