Meeting patients’ pain and palliative care needs demands a balance of the best of the art and science of caring. Challenges such as safely and effectively treating pain and compassionately and competently counseling patients and families facing serious illness or bereavement can leave one with the feeling of staring at a blank canvas. This conference has gathered a multi-talented faculty to share the state of both the art and the science of pain management and palliative care, to inspire you with their creative presentations, and take you from that blank canvas to a larger palate of care options to create your masterpiece in meeting these vital patient needs.

Educational Objectives: After completing this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Develop safer and more effective pain management strategies
  • Explain and practice “mindful presence”
  • Develop strategies for provider self-care
  • Integrate culturally competent care in the clinical setting
  • Identify complicated grieving and understand potential coping mechanisms
  • Discuss the benefits of complementary therapies
  • List ways to incorporate art therapy into the care of patients with pain or palliative care needs
