Registration for The Queen’s Medical Center conference on Pain & Palliative Care is now open.

Meeting patients’ pain and palliative care needs demands a balance of the best of the art and science of caring. Challenges such as safely and effectively treating pain and compassionately and competently counseling patients and families facing serious illness or bereavement can leave one with the feeling of staring at a blank canvas. This conference has gathered a multi-talented faculty to share the state of both the art and the science of pain management and palliative care, to inspire you with their creative presentations, and take you from that blank canvas to a larger palate of care options to create your masterpiece in meeting these vital patient needs.

Educational Objectives: After completing this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe ethical challenges that advances in resuscitation have created
  • Discuss evolving challenges in managing pain associated with malignancies
  • Develop strategies for facilitating effective communication
  • Identify at least two culturally and linguistically appropriate tools for Pacific Islanders
  • Advise patients of the uses of medical marijuana that are best supported by evidence
  • List three risk factors for substance misuse in the cancer pain population
  • Review current research regarding hyperalgesia and its implication for cancer pain control
  • Identify two barriers to discussing Advance Care Planning
  • List ways to incorporate music into the care of patients with pain or palliative care needs
