SUMMARY:Thur Sept 24 Kōkua Mau Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that Kaiser Hawaii has an ePOLST in their EMR?  \n\n\n\nThis allows providers to complete and update the POLST orders on-line\, including signatures\, and then have it included in the EMR. This helps with instant portability and access\, faster processing\, and reduced administrative errors. \n\n\n\nJoin us as Dr. Carolin Hubbard will be doing a demonstration of their ePOLST as well as giving updates on Kaiser’s palliative care programs.  \n\n\n\nKaiser is the first in Hawaiʻi to have this and we hope that other systems will be able to have this capability as well.  \n\n\n\nPOLST is a portable medical order that documents a patients care plan outside of the hospital. It is widely used in Hawaiʻi and Kōkua Mau is the hub for POLST.  \n\n\n\nThur Sept 243-5 PM \n\n\n\n\nRegister in advance for this zoom meeting:\n\n\n\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Bridging Health Literacy: Equipping Bilingual Health Workers
DESCRIPTION:Program Description: Serious illness conversations ask us to show deep care\, clarity\, and cultural respect. In Hawaiʻi\, where many patients speak languages other than English and draw strength from ʻohana\, these conversations carry even more meaning. Bridging Health Literacy: Equipping Bilingual Health Workers is a hands-on workshop that supports bilingual staff and interpreters in guiding patients through complex medical information with compassion and cultural grounding. \n\n\n\nTue 9/299 am to 3 PM \n\n\n\nParticipants will practice “talk story” approaches\, explore common health literacy barriers in local communities\, and learn strategies to help patients and families understand their options during serious illness and end‑of‑life discussions. Together\, we strengthen communication across languages—so every patient feels heard\, supported\, and empowered in their care. \n\n\n\nLearning Objectives  \n\n\n\n\nEnhance culturally grounded communication skills so bilingual health workers can support patients and ʻohana in understanding serious illness information with clarity and compassion.\n\n\n\nRecognize and address health literacy barriers common in Hawaiʻi’s diverse communities\, using “talk story” and other local communication practices to promote understanding.\n\n\n\nBuild confidence in guiding sensitive conversations by integrating cultural values\, respectful language support\, and collaborative approaches with clinical teams during serious illness and end‑of‑life care discussions.\n\n\n\n\nThis workshop is free of charge to bilingual health care workers\, Community Health Workers\, and medical interpreters.
