SUMMARY:Palliative Pupus Nov 2024
DESCRIPTION:We’d like to invite you to our virtual and in person Palliative Pupus\n\n\n\nWe’d like to invite you to our hybrid Palliative Pupus. \n\n\n\nWe will be presenting a complex case of a recent patient who was admitted to hospice but subsequently revoked services. There are several facets of this case that complicated his care\, particularly his desire to pursue hospice while his family hesitated to accept end-of-life care. All are welcome as we discuss the case and learn how others address such challenging cases. \n\n\n\nWe will meeting in person at Queen’s Conference Center (OCC) again. We hope you will join us to see colleagues in person and eat real pupus. Please bring something to share!! \n\n\n\nValidated parking for the Miller St. Parking lot (Miller only) at the QCC front desk. For those who cannot attend in person\, see below for registration information. \n\n\n\nPlease see our website for QCC and parking information. \n\n\n\nWed Nov 20\, 20245:15 -6:30 PM HSTQueen’s Conference Center & zoom \n\n\n\nPalliative Pupus is a unique opportunity to hear about a palliative care case. It is good for palliative care practitioners to learn and increase skills. It is also an excellent opportunity to learn about what palliative care really is and what our amazing colleagues actually do. Cases usually involve a range of practitioners including doctor\, nurse\, chaplain and social workers and cover physical\, emotion and spiritual issues.  \n\n\n\nThe topic and zoom registration link will be announced in our November 2024 newsletter prior to the meeting.

SUMMARY:Kokua Mau Monthly Meeting Feb 2025
DESCRIPTION:Thur 2/27 Kōkua Mau Meeting – What Matters to Native Hawaiian Elders: Care Preferences\n\n\n\nPlease join the first 2025 Kōkua Mau meeting to get updates and to hear about a recent study on Native Hawaii Kūpuna Care preferences led by the lead author UH Social Work Asst. Professor Miquela Ibrao. \n\n\n\nA study by the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s Hā Kūpuna – National Resource Center for Native Hawaiian Elders has examined the end-of-life care preferences of Native Hawaiian kūpuna (Elders). Led by Laguna Pueblo and Quechan woman\, Assistant Professor Miquela Ibrao\, researchers from UH and ALU LIKE\, Inc. identified culturally specific approaches to support kūpuna values in healthcare. \n\n\n\n“Death is not an end but a transition that honors relationality\, ancestors and the land\,’ Assistant Professor Ibrao said. “Decolonizing end-of-life care means respecting cultural beliefs and embracing Indigenous wisdom about healing and living well.” The study\, published in the Journal of Palliative Medicine\, is based on interviews with 20 kūpuna aged 60 and over from rural areas across Hawaiʻi. It highlights four key themes. \n\n\n\n\nCultural perspectives on death: Kūpuna view death as a transition that acknowledges relationships with ancestors and the land.\n\n\n\nTraditional healing practices: Lāʻau lapaʻau (herbal medicine) and lomilomi (massage) are essential aspects of care.\n\n\n\nFamily-centered decision-making: ʻOhana (family) plays a central role in healthcare choices\, with deceased ancestors and the ʻāina (land) seen as sources of guidance and healing.\n\n\n\nPreference for home-based care: Many kūpuna wish to age and die at home but fear burdening their families\, with limited long-term care options in rural areas adding to the challenge.\n\n\n\n\nThur Feb 273-4:30pm  \n\n\n\n\nRegister in advance for this meeting\n\n\n\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease join us for our Virtual Monthly Meeting on zoom\, to learn\, laugh\, mingle and network.
