SUMMARY:Kokua Mau Monthly Meeting Feb 2025
DESCRIPTION:Thur 2/27 Kōkua Mau Meeting – What Matters to Native Hawaiian Elders: Care Preferences\n\n\n\nPlease join the first 2025 Kōkua Mau meeting to get updates and to hear about a recent study on Native Hawaii Kūpuna Care preferences led by the lead author UH Social Work Asst. Professor Miquela Ibrao. \n\n\n\nA study by the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s Hā Kūpuna – National Resource Center for Native Hawaiian Elders has examined the end-of-life care preferences of Native Hawaiian kūpuna (Elders). Led by Laguna Pueblo and Quechan woman\, Assistant Professor Miquela Ibrao\, researchers from UH and ALU LIKE\, Inc. identified culturally specific approaches to support kūpuna values in healthcare. \n\n\n\n“Death is not an end but a transition that honors relationality\, ancestors and the land\,’ Assistant Professor Ibrao said. “Decolonizing end-of-life care means respecting cultural beliefs and embracing Indigenous wisdom about healing and living well.” The study\, published in the Journal of Palliative Medicine\, is based on interviews with 20 kūpuna aged 60 and over from rural areas across Hawaiʻi. It highlights four key themes. \n\n\n\n\nCultural perspectives on death: Kūpuna view death as a transition that acknowledges relationships with ancestors and the land.\n\n\n\nTraditional healing practices: Lāʻau lapaʻau (herbal medicine) and lomilomi (massage) are essential aspects of care.\n\n\n\nFamily-centered decision-making: ʻOhana (family) plays a central role in healthcare choices\, with deceased ancestors and the ʻāina (land) seen as sources of guidance and healing.\n\n\n\nPreference for home-based care: Many kūpuna wish to age and die at home but fear burdening their families\, with limited long-term care options in rural areas adding to the challenge.\n\n\n\n\nThur Feb 273-4:30pm  \n\n\n\n\nRegister in advance for this meeting\n\n\n\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease join us for our Virtual Monthly Meeting on zoom\, to learn\, laugh\, mingle and network. SUMMARY:Palliative Pupus (zoom) Sept 2025
DESCRIPTION:We’d like to invite you to zoom only Palliative Pupus. \n\n\n\nThis month: Hospice Mauiʻs Interdisciplinary Team will be presenting a complex palliative care and hospice case involving a single mother of two young children who experienced a recurrence of aggressive metastatic breast cancer. The case was marked by challenging family dynamics\, conflicting goals of care\, and difficult-to-manage symptoms. Navigating care required creative problem-solving and full engagement of our interdisciplinary team to ensure compassionate\, coordinated support for both the patient and her family. \n\n\n\nOur exciting local bi-monthly networking and clinical education opportunity on zoom. Come participate in an interactive interdisciplinary story from the cutting edge of hospice and palliative care and mingle with colleagues from all over the islands on zoom. If you are involved with palliative care cases\, you are invited. Please tell your colleagues and friends.  \n\n\n\nAt the May meeting we meet on zoom only\, to include neighbor islands and others on zoom. \n\n\n\nHow does Palliative Pupus work?\n\n\n\nThe theme and presenters for each ‘Palliative Pupus’ is announced one to two weeks prior to the meeting date via our Kōkua Mau eNewsletter. If you are not receiving our eNewsletter yet\, please subscribe here and we will keep you informed. \n\n\n\nWhat is Palliative Pupus?\n\n\n\nOur first successful Palliative Pupus meeting was held November 17\, 2010 and has since become a bi-monthly event every third Wednesday of the month. (Except November due to Thanksgiving) \n\n\n\nThe model is an informal\, interactive\, collegial\, pau hana to present and discuss challenging cases as a group.  Palliative Pupus is for clinicians in a variety of fields: doctors\, nurses\, social workers\, chaplains.

SUMMARY:Kokua Mau Meeting Sept 2025
DESCRIPTION:MyDirectives digital ACP solutions\n\n\n\nThur Sept 25 12 noon – 1:30pm \n\n\n\nPlease note that this month’s meeting starts at NOON since our speaker lives on the East Coast. Invite your colleagues who are interested in this possible solution for Hawaii. \n\n\n\nHigh-quality digital advance care planning (ACP) enables patients’ voices to be heard across all points of care. When advance directives\, mental health advance directives (MHADs)\, and portable medical orders (POLST) are accessible in real time\, care teams can honor patient healthcare goals and preferences\, reduce unnecessary and unwanted treatments\, and lessen the emotional burden on families and clinicians \n\n\n\nHere in Hawaii we continue to look for solutions to help make sure that documents can be found when they are needed. I reached out to MyDirectives as I have heard them present at national meetings AND they are interested in helping Hawaii succeed.  \n\n\n\nPlease join us to hear from MyDirectives about their digital ACP solutions. They have a nationwide registry and work with each state to create comprehensive systems that allow the entire healthcare community – providers\, health plans\, first responders\, state agencies\, HIEs/HDUs\, and quality organizations to access documents any where\, any time. In Hawaiʻi\, this approach can accelerate adoption of best practices\, streamline deployment across care settings — including for EMS and fire teams providing care in the field — and deliver the reporting and analytics needed to measure impact on quality and cost.  \n\n\n\nJoin Jessica Zan\, Vice President of Clinical Integration at MyDirectives\, to explore how Hawaiʻi can build a comprehensive ACP ecosystem that improves outcomes for patients\, families\, and the healthcare system as a whole. \n\n\n\n\nRegister in advance for this meeting\n\n\n\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
