Healthcare professionals are increasingly seeing hospice as an important way to improve care and the quality of life for terminally ill patients. Hospice is available around the state and seen as best practice, but there is still much more that we can do as state to educate the community and make hospice care more accessible and acceptable. Hawai‘i is actually slightly below the national average for hospice usage so we know that we have room for improvement!

Judi Lund Person, BA, MPH, CHC is the Vice President, Regulatory and Compliance for the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) where she serves as a key contact with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Judi helps ensure that NHPCO’s voice is heard with policymakers. She frequently interfaces with federal administrators of hospice payment policy, Part D, survey and certification, contractor management, and program integrity functions. She represents NHPCO with each of the Medicare Administrative Contractors and represents hospice and palliative care with other federal agencies and many national organizations. Extended bio
Because of Kōkua Mau’s long time partnership with NHPCO, Jennifer and Judy have made time to meet with key stakeholders in our community while there conduct trainings on Oahu and in Hilo. This meeting is primarily for legislators, DOH, DHS, OHCA, EOA, AARP, ACS-CAN and others interested in health policy. This is a great chance to hear about what is going on now in Washington and what are the trends in the future. They are also going to be speaking about Palliative Care and other innovations for those with serious illness.
