Over 120 people from Hawaii participated! \nPlease not that you need to sign up to access the webinar recording. \n\nThe recording of the webinar: link here.\nClick here for the slide presentation\n\n\nPreparing for Medical Aid in Dying: Perspectives and lessons from California\nWe have asked our colleagues at the Coalition for Compassionate Care of California\, a sister organization to Kōkua Mau\, to share their experiences and suggestions as Hawaii moves towards a January 1\, 2019 start date for our law. The laws are very similar and their experiences are very relevant. They will be sharing data from the first two years\, information on provider and community education as well as the experiences from a Kaiser physician that is assisting in implementing the law in their region. \nTue. August 28\n9 am to 10:30 AM Hawaii time \nAbout the Presenters:\nLael Duncan\, MD\, is the Medical Director for the Coalition for Compassionate Care of California. She is an expert educator on Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST)\, end-of-life communication between patients and providers\, advance care planning\, and legislation that impacts end-of-life care in California. Dr. Duncan consults with health care organizations\, medical providers and communities to improve access to care that honors patient values. \nDr. Duncan is a licensed California physician with more than 15 years of clinical practice in internal medicine\, infectious disease\, and long term acute care for patients with multi-system disease. After graduating with honors from the University of Washington Medical School in 1991\, Dr. Duncan did her residency training at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. She is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. Dr. Duncan has practice experience with in-patient and out-patient care\, hospital epidemiology and infection control\, long term care\, and rehabilitation following critical illness. \nDr. Bates D. Moses\, MD\, MA\, FHM\, FAAHPM is a palliative medicine physician and the physician director of bioethics for Kaiser Permanente in Southern California. He has received awards in pain management\, published the “Palliative Medicine Pocketbook” as part of the popular Tarascon medical book series and just completed his MA in Bioethics. Last year he published an article entitled “Incorporating the Goals of Medicine with the Goals of Care” for the American Society of Clinical Oncology POST (June 25\, 2017). \nHe spends the majority of his time in direct patient care working closely with his palliative care colleagues in caring for seriously ill hospitalized patients and supporting their loved ones. He enjoys collaborating with Southern California Kaiser Permanente’s eleven full-time ethicists and various task forces\, including for California’s end-of-life option act\, in developing or reviewing regional policies and ethics quality improvement projects. \nJudy Thomas\, JD\, is CEO of the Coalition for Compassionate Care of California\, a statewide partnership of healthcare providers\, non-profit organizations and associations\, state agencies and individuals working to ensure all seriously-ill Californians receive quality\, compassionate care. The Coalition brings together multiple organizations\, often with divergent interests\, to develop\, implement\, and promote improved health care practices and standards across the continuum of care. \nJudy is an attorney with over 20 years in healthcare. Before law school\, she worked in the early field of managed care as a computer programmer for the nation’s first preferred provider organization. Later\, as a lobbyist for LeadingAge of California and the California Hospital Association\, she focused on aging and long-term care issues. Formerly a partner in the Sacramento-based law firm of Hunter\, Richey\, Di Benedetto & Brewer\, Judy specialized in healthcare law and took an interest in issues affecting people with serious illness. She is a graduate of the University of California\, Davis\, where she received both her Juris Doctorate and her Bachelor of Science degree. \nToday\, Judy chairs the National POLST (Physician Order for Life-Sustaining Treatment) Paradigm Task Force and serves on the Donate Life California advisory board. She was recently named a Practice Change Leader by the John A. Hartford Foundation.
