The next Hawaii ECHO continuing education session on dementia issues for Memory Care Navigators and dementia care providers: “Caregiving and Dementia: Engaging in Early Conversations to Prevent and Resolve Conflict“.

Tuesday, April 24, 2017
10-11 am: Presentation, Case Discussion, Q&A
In this session, the presenters will focus on why early conversations are so important in helping families and individuals face the challenge of dementia – how “the failure to talk and discuss concerns, needs, frustrations and values, is a recipe for conflict.” (Wiltgen slides) Mediation Center of the Pacific offers the Kupuna Pono Program, using qualified mediators to help with family conferencing on difficult issues and planning to support the elder. The process of mediation and family conferencing will be described and how it can help with making important choices. A case will be shared by a gerontological nurse practitoner to illustrate why it’s so important to have conversations early and resolve conflicts for the benefit of the elder.

Please share and forward this notice to your colleagues who may be interested. They are opening up these sessions to more attendees.

REMINDER: Please note that if you are only able to phone in and not use a computer, that the call-in numbers above are not toll free. All phones do not incur charges, but this might present a problem for those of you in offices that don’t allow your desk phones to call non-tollfree numbers. This problem can be alleviated by using your cell phone or logging on and using the audio from the computer for these sessions, or using a phone in your office that does allow this. If you are using your computer speaker you won’t need to call in.
